Citizen Curators - Core Four
13.01.2020 - Curators in the Community
@ Falmouth Art Gallery

This week we're looking at how curators can share museums and their collections more widely by considering  communities.

A community is defined as : "A group of people who share interests, characteristics or experiences and can be labelled by those outside or inside their community."

I am not altogether comfortable with grouping people in this way but I know from my work in marketing that it can be a useful way to speak to people with similar interests, or those in a particular geographical area.

We were encouraged to think about where we sit in all of this and what our own communities might be. Here's my list:

  • Museum
  • Citizen Curators
  • Work (ILOW, Stranger Collective etc)
  • Writing groups (Cornwall Writers, 26)
  • Where I live - Porthleven
  • Where I am from - Lytham (family, friends, groups)
  • Institute of Stories
  • Facebook and Instagram (digital communities)
  • Mums
  • School
  • Nursery
  • Local friends
  • University friends
  • Falmouth University alumni
  • Sheffield University alumni
  • Bickford Smith Working Party
  • Friends
  • NCT Mums
  • Porthleven Fitness
Communities can be very useful for testing ideas. As curators we should remember to listen and try to remove any barriers or obstacles. We should also seek diversity in the communities we engage with (it's important, and it's the number 1 priority for funders in the UK).
