Citizen Curators - Core One
07.10.2019 - Introductory Session
@ Museum of Cornish Life, Helston

About a month ago I applied to be a part of the second Citizen Curators Cohort with Cornwall Museums Partnership and Monday 7th October was my first chance to get involved, meet my fellow curators and find out more about what we'd be up to.

I'll be based as a volunteer at the Museum of Cornish Life in Helston where I'll be examining objects form the archive and helping to curate an exhibition. Beyond that we will also be responsible, as a group for putting forward ideas for objects to be included in the Cornish National Collection.

This blog will be a place to record my experiences, reflections, resources and activities as we progress through the programme, which is run in collaboration with Cornwall Museums Partnership and supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund.

Today we met our course leader Dr Tehmina Goskar who runs the Curatorial Research Centre and who created the Citizen Curators programme. We also met Annette McTavish, the Director of the Museum of Cornish Life.

Object handling and stories

The morning session was an introduction to the programme and the role of the curator in museums and in the afternoon we considered objects, how they can be elevated by being placed in a Museum and what stories they might tell.
